For the first time ever, I have started and completed a script for an episode of a web series that I created called What We Want, What We Get. The experience I had writing this piece was remarkable. I noticed new things about myself as a writer and creative. I took a different approach to script writing and took on better ways of writing in contrast with previous experience with other creative pieces.
Previously, I would try typing the draft of my script from notes and overviews. This time I actually hand wrote it first. This is something that I had gotten away from as it can be very time consuming to write an entire script then typing it out later. Because What We Want, What We Get is a web-series, I was able to take my time in actually writing a second draft and not typing it. I found this to be very effective and useful with fixing formatting errors. It was easier to feel and see the progress, mistakes and where my script could get better. Most importantly, my process of writing this webisode allowed me to visually see that I can actually do this and for a very long time. I would love nothing more than to write scripts and create for a living.
The vision for my future and what I want to do with my writing is much clearer because I fell deeper in love with the writing process in this short period of time. Knowing how to create and write a web-series gives me vision for the future, and it is something that I can build my portfolio and experience with. This meshes perfectly with my goals as a writer because I will be able to build on this experience. I will get better at writing short scripts, so I can then push out longer movie scripts and TV show scripts. I see this as a building process.
In order to make this experience a reality I can live off of, I will continue to write and finish this web-series, write and finish more and make them a part of my portfolio to send to companies looking for writers. I have learned a great deal about descriptive writing and details, and things even gaming companies like to see in their writers. Luckily, they want to see that a writer can actually write, and short scripts are a perfect way to show this. My overall experience has opened the doors of my mind to greater outcomes for my career as a writer, the type of writing I can do and the pace I can create scripts in.
